Shawne Major takes a narrative approach to create her visual story. Using mixed media in her Into the Rabbit Hole and The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe to explore a pale melancholia expressed through lost innocence and neglect. Brightly colored ornaments and toys are wrapped in translucent abaca paper made into an encapsulating, blocky armchair and a stale jewelry box. Memories are vulnerable and may not endure—Major is interested in the forces that shape our understanding of ‘reality’.
Born in Louisiana, Shawne Major received a BFA in Painting from the University of Southwestern Louisiana and an MFA in Sculpture from Rutgers University.
