Gregory Coates achieves another kind of rhetoric in 4-R. His asymmetrical collage of wood, paper and paint abandons traditional means of producing art. The paper and wood construction celebrates urban melancholy, like that found in walls left standing at an old-law tenement demolition site. Coates is inventive with his use of found materials, which create unique works each with their own untold story.
Born in Washington D.C., Gregory attended the Corcoran School of Art followed by the Kunst Akademie Duesseldorf, Germany, and then the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.
